how does sensorimotor art therapy work?
When we engage in creative exercises and activities we are often able to express ourselves in ways not always available through talking alone. We can access feelings and memories, reconnect with our strengths and find new ways of relating to ourselves and in the world.
Sensorimotor Art Therapy offers a wide range of art making approaches and also incorporates aspects of other psychotherapeutic practices to awaken our senses and inner perceptions.
‘Art making is an awakening agent…since ancient times, art has served as a means to repair and renew the self, and the world’s wisdom traditions have affirmed imagery as a remedy for what ails body and mind.’ *Cathy Malchiodi.*
Art making can be a balm for emotional pain and suffering - soothing and settling our nervous system. Art materials invite us to express difficult or uncomfortable feelings, without necessarily using words, and we can experience a great sense of release and relief in making them visible in this way. When we represent parts of ourself and our life artistically, using colour, shape and form, we are often able to see things differently. New perspectives appear and with them comes new possibilities. And as we create something new through the art making process we may begin to also create ourselves and our life anew.
Kate offers a safe supportive space for all of this to take place in. Free of judgement, full of compassion for you and your situation and trusting of your own innate body wisdom to help guide the process.
